His parents couldn't decide on a middle name for him, and both of their choices started with an S, so he just took on the middle initial S (Truman).
Harry S Truman's family was a family that moved a lot. When he was three, they moved to Grandview, Missouri. When he was six, they moved to Independence ("Truman: HST Biography"). He got eyeglasses at the age of eight. By the age of 14, he had read all the books in the Independence Library and the Bible three times (Truman). His family also moved to Kansas City when he was 18, but that didn't really affect him because he was out of the house by then ("Truman:HST Biography").
